Western Works: SensoriaPro Scoring Contest 2022 Winner

I’m delighted & honoured to have been selected as the winning entry for SensoriaPro’s Scoring Contest 2022! “This specially edited clip shows a sequenced montage of the C.J. & Co. workshops at Western Works, Sheffield in 1928. It focuses on the multitude of processes in the production of table knives - from the blast furnace through hammering, ‘mooding', beveling, cutting out, hand grinding, tang annealing, side glazing, etching, handle boring, scraping & filing, polishing, buffing, shaping & whetting, wiping, wrapping, boxing & labeling.” (SensoriaPro brief)

That Long Moonless Chase / その長い月のない追跡

A surreal audio-visual performance based on two folkloric legends from Sheffield and Kyoto. The performance is a collaboration with animator Noriko Okaku who created a live mixed-media animation, alongside my composition for baritone sax, electronics & recorded voices including sound design elements from Başar Ünder. Read more here.

The first iteration of this work was commissioned and supported by the British Council and Sensoria, with research support from Sheffield Hallam University's CCMS.

Up Helly Aa - Archive Film Soundtrack (FAMLAB 2021)

As part of Sensoria / British Council / BFI’s 5-day FAMLAB 2021, I created a soundtrack for this short archive clip of the Up Helly Aa Norse Viking Festival in Lerwick.

It was an inspiring week, exploring the relationship between archive film and music, and getting to know the other brilliant participants in this 5-day residency.

This was a fun experiment in scoring for archive film, and finding a relationship to this historic clip of a celebratory, somewhat absurd and at times dark all-male procession.
